Talk by Dr. Christiane Wallesch-Schneller, Blaues Haus Breisach | As part of the lecture series “The United States at 250”

Thousands of refugees from Germany sought to enlist in the Allied forces during World War II. “For us, the war was a civil war, and we were on the right side” (Capt. Peter Leighton, Royal Artillery; born Wilhelm Peter Langer of Vienna). Fred Mayer, a native of Freiburg, is said to have been the inspiration for one of the characters in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.”
