Dance Performance & Talk with Rebecca Mary Narum, Freiburg & USA & Jun.-Prof. Felipe Fernández, University of Freiburg | As part of the event series "On the Ropes: Midterms in America"

Voices Across the Divide combines dance, storytelling, and conversation to explore how people from diverse backgrounds experience and navigate the current political and social climate in the United States.

Aus Interviews mit US-Amerikaner werden Fragmente ihrer persönlichen Geschichten und Perspektiven zu einer Soundkomposition verwoben, der ein sich bewegender Körper durch Tanzimprovisation begegnet. Anstatt nach klaren Antworten oder einem repräsentativen Bild der amerikanischen Gesellschaft zu suchen, schafft die Performance Raum für Komplexität, Unsicherheit und menschliche Erfahrungen jenseits politischer Zuschreibungen. Dadurch entsteht ein Dialog zwischen Stimme und Körper, zwischen Zuhören und Reagieren, zwischen Unterschied und Anerkennung.

Drawing on interviews with Americans, fragments of their personal stories and perspectives are woven into a sound composition to which a moving body responds through dance improvisation. Rather than seeking clear answers or a representative picture of US society, the performance aims to create a space for the complexity, uncertainty, and human experiences that can exist beyond political labels. A dialogue emerges between voice and body, listening and responding, difference and recognition.

Rebecca Mary Narum

Rebecca Mary Narum is a US-American dancer, choreographer, and teacher based in Freiburg since 2015. She holds a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Smith College and trained in dance, improvisation, and performance in New York, Spain, and Germany. Her choreographic practice brings movement into dialogue with social, cultural, and political questions, and she is currently pursuing an M.A. in Anthropology at the University of Freiburg.

Jun.-Prof. Dr. Felipe Fernández

Felipe Fernández is an assistant professor of social and cultural anthropology at the University of Freiburg, Germany. He trained as an anthropologist and historian at the Freie Universität in Berlin and holds a master’s degree and a PhD in Latin American studies from the same university. His research focuses on infrastructures, state bureaucracy, and expert cultures in Latin America.
