Thousands of refugees from Germany sought to enlist in the Allied forces during World War II. “For us, the war was a civil war, and we were on the right side” (Capt. Peter Leighton, Royal Artillery; born Wilhelm Peter Langer of Vienna). Fred Mayer, a native of Freiburg, is said to have been the inspiration for one of the characters in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.”
Dr. Christiane Walesch-Schneller is the director of the Blaues Haus in Breisach, the museum housed in the former Jewish community center.
