Our climate is groaning, the 1.5-degree target is receding into the distance—but coal-fired power plants and global warming are not solely to blame. “Ökorassismus. Wie Weiße unsere Welt zerstören,” the new nonfiction book by successful journalist Ciani-Sophia Hoeder, reveals in a relentless and provocative manner how the ecological crisis and racist exploitation are intertwined. Those who celebrate the green middle class with bamboo toothbrushes and solar panels often overlook who bears the real costs – namely, people in indigenous communities, people with landfills in their neighborhoods, people in the Global South. Hoeder calls it what it is: systemic injustice that deliberately devalues people and causes environmental destruction at the same time. The author is the founder of the feminist online magazine “RosaMag” and became known for books such as “Wut & Böse” (Anger & Evil) and “Vom Tellerwäscher zum Tellerwäscher” (From Dishwasher to Dishwasher). She brings personal commitment, journalistic depth, and political clarity to an incorruptible analysis of our present. Hoeder challenges us pointedly: it is not enough to simply want to save the climate—we must also create justice. How do we want to live—and at whose expense?
Ciani-Sophia Hoeder is a freelance journalist and founder of RosaMag, the first online lifestyle magazine for Black FLINTA* in Germany. She studied politics and journalism in Berlin and London.
