Book Stars

The Book Stars are the English-language book club for kids and teens aged 14 to 19 at the Carl-Schurz-Haus. They all have one thing in common: they love reading in English and discussing their latest book discoveries in a cozy atmosphere! Everyone is welcome to contribute book requests and ideas. They meet once a month in the library of the Carl Schurz House to discuss the books they have read. The books are provided by the library, of course, or you can read them at home on one of our Kindles. And that’s not all: Carl-Schurz-Haus regularly invites well-known authors to give readings for students—and our Book Stars get to moderate. They have also visited book fairs and organized a cool sleepover party at the Carl-Schurz-Haus. In this book club, you can not only meet fellow book lovers and make new friends, but also improve your English skills along the way!

Gaming Club

The CSH Gaming Club is a space for students to play video games and practice their English in a fun way. At our weekly meetings, we usually play Minecraft or Nintendo Switch games (“Mario Kart 8”, “Super Smash Brothers”, etc.) together. The Gaming Club Manager guides members through various tasks that test their problem-solving skills and teamwork. The CSH Gaming Club provides “Minecraft” accounts, laptops, Nintendo Switches, and games, but everyone is also welcome to bring their own computer or Switch. We look forward to seeing you!

Quilt Club

Since 1987, the quilt club has been bringing together creative minds who are passionate about patchwork and quilting. In a cozy atmosphere, we exchange techniques, patterns, and new ideas. The history of the quilt, originally a three-layer, hand-sewn throw, dates back to 17th-century America. Today, quilts not only keep us warm, but often serve as wall decorations. By using different fabric remnants, quilting is not only sustainable, but also produces unique, individual works of art. As members of the Carl-Schurz-Haus, club participants can work on their own projects and inspire each other every last Friday of the month. Meetings take place from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the conference room of the Carl-Schurz-Haus.

Square Dance Club
This traditional group dance style from the USA requires rhythm and concentration, as the steps are called out by a “caller” while the dancers are still dancing. Whether to traditional country melodies or current pop and schlagers music, it never gets boring here! Since 1987, the club has been offering its members the opportunity to get together to learn the steps and “calls” of square dancing. Training takes place at the clubhouse of TTC Rot-Weiß Freiburg e. V. (Böcklerstr. 11, 79110 Freiburg) every other Tuesday from 8 to 10 p.m. Please bring gym or dance shoes so you can get started right away! You are registered after signing up for a a membership at the Carl-Schurz-Haus. Beginners are welcome to inquire about special beginner courses, which are offered as part of an “open house,” among other things.

Freiburg-Madison Society
The Freiburg-Madison Society (FMG) was founded in 1989, one year after the signing of the city partnership agreement between Madison, Wisconsin, and Freiburg.
Its goal is to facilitate encounters between the citizens of both cities in order to promote understanding of each other’s way of life and to foster international understanding. As a non-profit association, the FMG is open to all citizens who support exchange between the two cities. Current transatlantic issues are discussed at the monthly German-American get-together.
Madison and Freiburg are university cities. That is why promoting student exchanges is one of the FMG’s most important tasks. Every year, we enable young people to spend a year abroad, arrange internships, or help students with their exchanges. The FMG works hand in hand with its counterpart, the Madison Freiburg Sister City Committee (MFSCC). Locally, we organize encounters, hikes, and cultural activities for American students.
