Scholarship

Spend a school year in Freiburg’s sister city Madison, Wisconsin, USA, as a Freiburg Ambassador with the Carl-Schurz Scholarship!

To make the dream of a high school year in the USA a reality, the Carl Schurz Scholarship is available to young people from the Freiburg administrative district. Together with NorthWest Student Exchange (NWSE), the Carl-Schurz-Haus is offering a scholarship for a high school year in the region around Freiburg’s twin city of Madison, Wisconsin. Applicants are selected on the basis of their application documents and interviews, in which personal impression is the decisive factor. The final selection of scholarship recipients is made by the Carl-Schurz-Haus in consultation with the exchange organization NWSE and the sponsors.

Requirements:

  • Are you between 15 and 18 years old at the start of the program?
  • Are you a student at a high school in the Freiburg administrative district?
  • Do you have basic English skills?
  • Are your academic achievements good?
  • Are you willing to live with a carefully selected host family, attend public school full-time, achieve good grades, participate in extracurricular activities, improve your language skills, and get to know and learn from the local culture?

What you need to do:

  • Give presentations about your home region/Freiburg at the host school, the host community, and the Madison-Freiburg Sister City Committee.
  • Write reports about your stay in the form of a diary, photos, or videos at regular intervals for the Carl-Schurz-Haus
  • After returning, report on your experiences for a year at info sessions at the Carl-Schurz-Haus or at trade fairs.

The application deadline for the 2026/27 school year ended on October 31, 2025!
