America is faltering—and so are we! Is the Western world in complete disarray? Renowned Die Zeit foreign correspondent Rieke Havertz delivers the book that this moment demands: “Goodbye, America?” is a relentless, worldly-wise look at a country that, under Donald Trump’s second presidency, is seeing its democratic foundations shaken to the core, to say the least. As the constitution and political reliability erode and the transatlantic alliance becomes unstable, Havertz travels through her own America: full of contradictions, full of anger – and full of good reasons not to give up on it yet. The internationally renowned top journalist and co-host of the hit podcast “OK, America?” combines precise analysis with personal intimacy, without ever slipping into alarmism or nostalgia. Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Hull calls Havertz one of the few voices who truly understands this torn country. Her book—and this evening—make it clear: anyone who believes that the U.S. can be deliberately ignored these days has failed to understand the tectonic shifts of our time.
Rieke Havertz, born in 1980, is an international correspondent for DIE ZEIT and has been co-hosting the podcast “OK, America?” since 2020. For several years, she reported from Washington on the country she fell in love with over 20 years ago—even if she sometimes despairs of it. Havertz studied journalism and American studies in Leipzig and at Ohio University. After working for taz, she joined DIE ZEIT in 2016.
