Christiane Walesch-Schneller traces the stages of Gerhard Abraham Schwab’s life: his childhood, marked both by family comfort and Nazi persecution; his successful escape to the U.S.; and his participation as a US soldier in the liberation of Europe. As a translator, he took part in the Nuremberg Trials from 1946 onwards and from there visited his destroyed homeland: Breisach, Freiburg, and Lörrach. Since 2003, he has supported efforts to establish the Blue House as a memorial and educational center. Without him, his friend Fred Mayer would not have returned to Freiburg either.
